My experience in the USA is that camera phones (I'm on my third, I think)
are so lousy they're not worth using at all. I don't mind the low
resolutions, I'd be happy with 2MP or even less. But my latest and
greatest HTC Mogul has a camera grotesquely less good than the Epson 850z
I bought in 2000. The artifacts are so grotesque with the camera phones
I've had that I can't really stand them.

I've seen perfectly adequate pictures from other people's camera phones,
so it's not universal even in the USA (nor is it that I'm so crazy fussy,
I don't think). The iPhone output I've seen is hugely better than
anything any of my camera phones has produced.

I'd really like my camera to get up to the "adequate posed snapshot" level
of quality.
