I have the older CanonG7 and the newer Leica DLux4, a Panasonic Lumix p&s and the new Canon underwater point and shoot in addition to my dslr stuff.
My current go to camera is the Canon underwater one. Sharp, vibrant colors, easy to use body and good layout of controls.
That doesn't exactly answer your question but it does speak to the quality of Canon gear.
I'd buy the G11 if it meets your needs. I don't think you'll be sorry with the quality they build into their gear.

life is short. photograph it.
Thanks for the responses so far. James is one of the
few that has addressed my specific request. I hope this doesn't get
high jacked by the Leica crowd. Great, but I can't justify the
expense. Yes, the swiveling viewfinder is paramount because I want to
take high angle shots over a crowd and low angle landscapes. The
Konica Minolta A2 I mentioned will do that but it is a little too
bulky. To clarify, I have pocket able digital cameras and I have 3
DSLRs so strike all that please. I want a really good quality,
manually adjustable travel camera with the ability to shoot low angle
and high angle shots. I would like RAW capture and speed is not
especially important. I guess I was asking if there were alternatives
to the Powershot G11. Does that help?

Oh, I have no problems with using other cameras, Emily. I have a Konica
Minolta A2 which I love except for the electronic viewfinder which I
find to be an abomination. For me!! I have used Pentax and Olympus
digitals as well and many, many other film cameras over the years. But
I was after a recommendation or a condemnation or an estimation or
something about the G11 or substitutes. I guess the Nikon preamble was
just too much of a distraction.
I bought a Canon G10 not long ago and it is one complicated little camera!
However, it takes nice picture without the bulk of a DSLR. It has limits sure.
Macro is a strong point as well as a decently fast lens. It's small enough for a
large pocket, robust and heavy enough for serious shooting.
I haven't heard about the G11 but a tilting moving preview screen has never been
on my short list. The G10's preview screen is incredibly clear and sharp and has
been usable from any angle.
