I wasn't suggesting that photoelasticity is not a valuable tool. I'm
just not sure if the setup is good enough for analysis of stress
concentrations to yield numerical results. I've never personally used
it.

It is indeed eminently suitable, and has been extensively used for
this very purpose, with plexiglass models of structural details.
Today, computer modelling has taken over, but it is still a
suggestive educational method.
