My understanding is that the slave flash goes off too soon, is
triggered by the pre-flash for either red-eye reduction, or
auto-focus calculations or flash power calculations or all of those.
It seems one must be able to squelch all preliminary light emitting
operations from the camera in order to get the external flash to be
triggered by the on-camera one.
I've tried black tape over those things and even that doesn't
completely eliminate the problem. My little peanut sensors are
really efficient...
