The flashes can be caused by the vitreous humor as it shrinks and pulls
away from the retina wall. It is a normal process of aging. However if you see a
big flash of light it is probably a retina tear. Retina tears are treated with
lasers to basically burn new attachment points of the retina to the wall of
the eye. If it is the retina coming completely detached then it is a major
operation.
