I'm writing to ask your help in recruiting a promising new colleague for a
tenure-track position in digital culture/intermedia arts practice at Southern
Illinois University, Carbondale. This faculty member will help build an evolving
curriculum in intermedia/digital culture at both the undergraduate and graduate
level. The position is an exceptional, program-building opportunity in the
College of Mass Communication and Media Arts whose evolving MFA and PhD programs
in the arts and scholarship emphasize criticality, interdisciplinarity, and
internationalism. Housed within the Department of Cinema and Photography, this
faculty member will have many opportunities for intellectual and pedagogical
exchange with professors and students across the college.

Position: Assistant Professor, SIUC, Digital/Intermedia Arts, tenure track.
Department: Cinema and Photography.
Date of Appointment: August 16, 2009 or until filled.
Salary: Competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Qualifications: MFA or Ph.D. with specialization in Digital/Intermedia Arts practice required.
Expertise may be demonstrated by creative work and exhibition venues. Ability to teach undergraduate
and graduate courses in an evolving curriculum in Intermedia Arts. Potential areas of teaching and
creative practice will combine the digital arts with one or more current media technologies:
photography, film, video, and audio. Creative approaches may include experimental, narrative, and
documentary genres as well as performative and interactive practices. Applicants should have a
strong interest in addressing the aesthetic, historical, and ideological implications of digital
culture and in independent artistic exploration that crosses traditional disciplines and/or modes of
production. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate expertise in one or more of the
following: digital technologies, especially web design and multimedia authoring; awareness of the
full range of technical options available to contemporary artists; the tactical uses of both "low"
and "high" technology; and potential for excellence in research and teaching. Teaching experience at
the undergraduate and graduate levels desirable. If candidate hired is unable to provide official
evidence of completion of the earned degree prior to date of appointment, this position will be
changed to an appointment at the rank of Instructor with a lower salary.
Duties: Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in theory and practice of Intermedia
arts. Engage actively in research/creative activity. Serve on and direct MFA thesis committees
and/or Ph.D. dissertation. Participate in professional associations and serve on Department,
College, and University committees.

The Department: The Department of Cinema and Photography offers a BA degree with courses in the
history, theory, criticism, and production of cinema, photography, video, and digital media. The
Department currently enrolls approximately 300 majors. Department faculty actively participate in
the MA, M.S., MFA, and Doctoral programs which are housed at the College level. Our educational
orientation is a holistic fine arts- and humanities-based understanding of media as social and
cultural practice. We are committed to graduating critical, original, and socially responsible
artists and scholars who, as global citizens, can imagine and produce alternatives in media theory
and practice. We are dedicated to fostering a creative and intellectual climate of active
engagement and support for faculty and students.
The College: The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts has three academic units, the
Departments of Cinema and Photography and Radio-Television and the School of Journalism, as
well as a service unit, WSIU Pubic Broadcasting, that houses the University's public radio and
television stations. The College enrolls approximately 1000 undergraduate and 150 graduate students.
The University: SIUC is a Carnegie Doctoral Research Extensive university, enrolls approximately
20,000 and annually ranks among the top institutions in the nation for producing minority graduates.
It is located 90 miles southeast of St. Louis in Carbondale, Illinois, a city of 25,000. The
Shawnee National Forest, which is famous for its rugged, hilly terrain and natural beauty, is
