Tape is cheaper to back-up to, but you could use optical drives that are very expensive.
I bought a new HD camera, but chose one that uses mini-DV tapes, that way i can save the raw footage in small tapes that are easy to store. Cameras that save to DVD or hard drives are going to create a storage problem for the owners.
You should choose the technology that makes senso to you, even if you are called outdated or luditte.
