The waste was relative, i had very little budget to spend on paper and chemicals, so i could not afford waste, but was limited experimenting wise. Digital tech took the financial cost out of the picture. I don't waste (just time on experiments that go nowhere sometimes) money or consumables (i very rarely print anything)
I enjoy the time spent on computers, because they are one of my creative tools, the others are video and still cameras.

I really liked the darkroom vinegar, though I wasn't a bit fan of mixing formaldehyde for the E6, but all the darkroom smells were normal for me. Like the way my grandfathers house always smelt of oil of turpentine and clove oil, acid and solvents.. comforting.
paper wastage was not something I had a lot of. I spent quite some time in my earlier days in the darkroom learning how not to waste stuff - it was something I *tried* to teach impatient students - but most couldn't wait and went at everything like a bull at a gate.
not saying impatience is the cause of all wastage.. but just that I concentrated hard on learning not to waste. same as I took notes while shooting, reviewed and learned to judge exposure.

Inkjets and digi just seem like more time in front of computers - something to endure, but rarely to enjoy
