Sorry if you all consider this "spam".

Not all of us. Take heart.

I do try to keep a list of photography contests on my website - blog, just as general information.

Sounds interesting. What's the url?

As I go around the galleries in NYC, it is clear that "Manhattan taste" has indeed digressed from the rest of the country.

Perusing magazines will reveal that as well.

I am still in the process of trying to understand why this is happening.

That's a very interesting question. We should discuss it on this list.

Gallery access is an important issue with fine art photographers. Almost all of the galleries in NYC now have very restrictive portfolio review policies. I can cost over $200 just to get Magnum or VII photographers to even look at your work.

That seems very inexpensive to me. Only $200 to be evaluated by the likes of Jim Nachtwey and Tony Kratochvil? Now that's a deal! Far better than the one you presented, in my thoughts. Neither Nachtwey nor Kratochvil specialize in being cutting edge, although Kratochvil is a bit more edgy. In my experience all of VII specializes in being very thoughtful and if you ever saw Kratochvil's image of the statue of liberty you'd recognize the combination of edgy and thoughtful rolled together - unlike some of the art on that site which seemed mostly edgy for its own sake.

Aperture now has an online submission policy, and requires that you be a subscriber to their magazine.

Most of us should be subscribers to either Aperture or Photo District News anyway. Aperture is among the most stunning and interesting photography magazines in the world.
