Looking at the question Herschel wants us to address I think we can simply never know. To begin with we have to come to a definition of "great". As soon as we begin that one, we come right up against "rules". How is this image great? Well, it does this and this and that and that - and those things (characteristics, rules) make it great for me. Well, turning to another person, do those things make it great for you?

Aw no. I don't think this, or this, or that, or even that have anything to do with greatness. In fact the image isn't even on my list of "great" at all.

So one persons meat....

But it might be interesting to take a single image, widely respected among photographers, and try to come to terms with what makes it great to each of us.
