long time lurkin' review

i've been lurking for a while...they cut the photography program at our school so i haven't been as productive as i normally am...oh well...i saw a couple of things this week that peaked my interest

Herschel Mair - Bedu man at an Eid goat auction

Outstanding color and detail Herschel.  Looks as though it were in low light as his pupils are quite dilated.  Was this cropped, or did you use a telephoto lens on this shot?  Seems pretty close to his face.  I know older folks in this region aren't usually hip to having their picture taken.

Lea Murphy - Owen, 6 month portrait

Cutey-petutey!  I really like these soft toned portraits.  The tone here enhances the warm feeling I get from the child's _expression_.  Good shot!

 D.L. Shipman -

Amazing color!  I'd comment on the sharpness but I don't have a tremendous amount of faith in the monitor I'm using.

Jim Snarski - It's the Berries

Great job at drawing warmth from such a cold situation.  Lovely bright reds and oranges.  This is one of the shots that caught my attention.  The background really makes it for me.  The shallow depth of field turns the scene into a shimmery pool of reflecting water.  I'm wondering if the geometric tinge to the blur is due to the digital rendering.

Peeter Vissak - The Morning has Broken

I like the sunrise, but the foreground is just too dark for it to do anything for me.  Would like to see more detail in the ice, especially that in the branches of the bush.

Guy Glorieux - Squaring the circle

I really like the lines here Guy.  Being a math nerd myself, I find the title quite amusing.  Did you try any longer exposures?  I would have liked to see more white blur from the water.

Trevor Cunningham - sang som

At last glance, I realize my title would be completely irrelevant to anyone not familiar with Thai spirits.  Sang Som is a Thai rum.  I went to a number of these fire shows on Koh Chang while enjoying Sang Som.  I thought this captured the feeling well...but how would anyone else know?!

Don Roberts - Water Tower #1

Not working for me.  You could have used a warming filter here to get rid of the blue.  Sky seems blown out (more likely a situation of the time of day this was shot).  Comp is a bit tight for me.

 Jeff Spirer - Construction

Love the light, not the filter though.  Although gritty, I wonder if the natural texures would have lent to a more stark and colder feel...assuming that's what you were going for.

 Tim Holmes - ICE

Well exposed.  Comp is a little awkward for me with the other icicle on the right.  I like the lines though.

 Qkano - Label

This was one of the other shots that raises questions for me.  Arm (with tags), DVD case, table, and rug.  Four simple items should lend to a simple composition, right?  The tabletop provides the right contrast and tonal warmth, the arm and DVD case seem very deliberate (on second look, I like the staring eyes), and the rug is just plain distracting.  I like the use of random objects here.  My question is: how do you place random objects to appear random to add to the accidental nature of the image?  (not that this comp is accidental, it just made me think)
