From an international media perspective. This is totally unacceptable.
The very least you are entitled to is a credit. I assume you are not charging for the use of these images?
They must display, at least,  the Copyright information which must include yopur name.
Don't fall for the newspaper people's bullshit (Excuse me) If they want to use your pictures then they must abide by your conditions.
I know it's nice to see your work published but don't let that get in the way of good practice.
What if some archaeological magazine in another country picks up on the story and they want to buy pictures. The newspaper will be the only place they can buy them. They won't even know your name...  and you'll get no money or credit.

Subject: Recognizing the Photographer

Just today, I received an email from a friend who is a correspondent of a
national newspaper here in the Philippines. He has written an article
about the partial destruction of an archaeological site in my city. I
happened to have photos of the site and the relics. He said the newspaper
editors want to have the photos printed, but they don't want to recognize
me as the photographer.

I asked my friend to convince the paper that the right thing to do is to
acknowledge the effort of the photographer. But he just told me that the
paper has refused to do so. He wants me to give in for the sake of "our
cause", which is to distribute information about how the government has
neglected our heritage site.

What is your take on this matter?

Pictures of the site, for those who haven't seen them yet, are in
http://heritage.elizaga.net.
