I use a Canon Digital Rebel 350 which I believe has similar noise qualities to the 10d. When I'm pushed to extremes I will shoot at 800 but it definitely requires a run through Neat Image to remove noise. 1600 is only for people who enjoy noise or for those fine art shots nobody but the artist understands.
