> There are more people in the world using > Linux (in all its flavours) than Apple but do we give a damn? Although I like Apple a lot (and used a PowerMac until it collapsed for it's high age) I am most of the time on budget and still cannot afford the PowerBook I've been after. I've also been in Linux, just for fun and openness. But when my (still partially unpaid) Fujitsu Siemens laptop was to go to warranty fixing shop for a couple of weeks, I have to live with an old AMD and a handful of Linux distros. No, WinXP won't definitely work on that oldie. All the different Knoppixes in contrary do, even the latest 4.02 (being really slow though). But here the problems start. The old distros (e.g. from 3.2 Nordisknoppix up to 3.7) are unable to communicate neither with my Nikon D70S nor with the Canon Pixma office printer (these models are simply missing from the devices' lists), but later distros (3.9 or 4.02) do not support the ancient AMD architecture or at least the ethernet card and I am absolutely unable to log into the Internet. Now, this or that. That means I have to limit my shooting to 10 frames per day to survive until I get back my laptop. Perhaps this even wouldn't be a disaster, while I already have gigas and gigas of ice, snow and frost in my archives, but my creative inner nature will be handicapped and my genius will be brutally suppressed, not to speak about the stock companies who continue to demand more and more NEW frames with ice, snow and frost :) So anybody, please, give me a hint how to overcome the problem of getting the USB device (a camera for instance) to work on my Knoppix 3.7 when it simply refuses. And yes, in that distro I even cannot login as root to make changes to the conf files. Root logins are simply not allowed in Knoppix 3.7. All I can do is to save my docs to my home folder. And feel stupid. Peeter PS: about being on budget - I'd like to pay for my hardware with my creative output, and I am eventually able to sell almost enough pictures straight from the wall, but unfortunately the midtown galleries charge only slightly less than I earn with sales. And You know, people really like to see the pics in full measures and on the wall to get excited and take out their wallets, not browse through boring thumbnails. -- Peeter Vissak +372 5560 1943 +372 5373 8855 pv@xxxxxx www.fotovissak.com www.foto.fie.ee
