Can you suggest a program (free or inexpensive) to archive digital
photos on DVD media? I'm not interested in a all inclusive program,
like most commercial programs, that include lots of PhotoShop like
features to improve photos. I just want to store lots of photos on
DVD disk and have ability to "tag" pictures to easily find them on
disk or multiple disks - stored in "albums" and retrievable as
album files or as individual pictures."
For a "photo hobby guy" wanting a "free or inexpensive" program,
without all the bells and whistles, they might care to use Picasa v2.
It's a free download from
http://picasa.google.com/index.html
Photos can be labelled (tagged), and marked with a star. Photos can
be burnt to CD and/or DVD. It also allows for burning slideshows. The
files end up on the CD (or DVD) in folders, in their original form
(e.g. JPGs written as JPGs).
In an earlier post, the sheer number of thumbnail files created,
scattered through each folder (sub-directory) was identified as a
problem. By going through the menu to Tools | Folder Manager, it can
be specified which folders to scan, and whether never, once, or
repeatedly. This gives more control than with the thumbs.db files
automatically created by windows explorer, when using the thumbnails
view. There's still disk capacity used up by the picasa.ini files,
but at least it's under control.
