I want to extend the storage life for my digital files and have been

As I fill these hard drives, can I disconnect and store them in

a
home library shelf?

for the price of a pelican case, you can buy a small fireproof (do not
expect wonders) safe. And be covered against a not so determined
burglar, who tempted might just pick up the Pelican case on his way
out...

You probably need a media-rated safe, not just a paper-rated safe.
You certainly do for diskettes and magnetic tapes, anyway.

I work in the IT field and there are of site storage outfits that store tapes and CDs, and DVDs in virtually fire proof, and just about everything proof, sites.

Not sure of cost but saving your company files is sort of important. Don't know that non-professionals are willing, or able, to spend the $$$$$$$
