I was suprised to see a unique image serial

Could be the counter is there to tell the camera when to break down?

IF
     (A) camera is out of warranty
AND
    (B) shutter count > spec
THEN
  Report error.

Pay $200 and they'll get it working for you again (by simply resetting
the counter).
