Howard,

I run SuSE Linux Professional 9.2 and I use Gimp to do all my image manipulation. It is extremely stable. Even the Windows applications I run under Wine run better on Linux than they do on Windows (imagine that!) as they never crash or freeze.

Scanners can be a little challenging but not because Gimp. SANE, the scanner utility for Linux has drivers for most new scanners. As for color profiles, Gimp has pretty much the same capabilities as Photoshop Elements. I can't say it's as feature-rich as Photoshop CS but it gets the job done. Printers are pretty much covered.

Cheers,

Marlon

Anyone in the Forum with serious experience of Linux and the Gimp? I'm not clear whether you can

1 colour manage profiles with the Gimp
2 load all vital drivers, e.g. for monitors and in particular printers (Epson R300)
3 and likewise scanners (Epson 4990 - an indulgence, probably not
worth the extra money)
4 And is Linux that stable anyway?

Having got QImage and PS to print pretty well (my wife approves - though her name is not Greta MacBeth - and that counts!) I'm loath to fiddle, but I hate windows so much!
