In my opinion, media cataloging applications are the way to go. PS is just
too cumbersome for anything like large-scale cataloging, key wording, and
retrieving images. I recently switched to iView MediaPro (I use Mac OS X,
but it's available on both platforms) after using Extensis Portfolio for
several years. It's like a breath of fresh air and is amazing me at every
turn. I highly recommend this program for cataloging media. I've read on
groups that iView is customer-service challenged, but I haven't had the need
to contact them yet. I currently have 22,000 images cataloged and expect to
see that double in the next year.
