I do not plan to go into high end. Can anybody point me to some websites
that review lenses? Also I would like to hear from anybody that have
hands-on experience with those brands.

He speaks much about not-so-expensive-but-just-very-well-performing lenses, both new and old.
Also NÆRFOTO Bjørn Rørslett (www.naturfotograf.com)
He has a very comprehensive overview about almost every possible Nikon lens.
But YOU are the one, who must choose ;o)
