Some CF cards are much faster than others, but in Rob Galbraith's tests RAW wrote almost as fast as Large Fine Jpeg:

The difference is only in hundredths of MBs per second. I have the SanDisk Extreme cards and they are very fast. And you can do a burst of several shots before the camera has to stop and catch up.
