We have now
conducted our first practical experiments using wooden guillotine
shutters mounted in front of the camera. We took a number of photographs on
Polaroid type 55 material which has a speed of 50 ISO. These demonstrated that
shutters of this kind work very effectively for both still and moving subjects.
Simple adjustments gave us speeds of 1/60th and 1/125th of a second with
poterntial for higher 'speeds'. The Polaroid 'prints' were
sufficiently encouraging for us to go into production for the shutters
for the re-enactment. The re-enactment will take place on a Friday in late
September (following APIS 2004) on Ham Polo Ground which is where the
London Polo Club plays.
An account of these experiments will be given in a
presentation at the Muybridge Seminar in Kingston upon Thames in November and
will be published in the PhotoHistorian which is the journal of the Historical
Group of the RPS.
The re-enactment itself will be filmed for
television.
If anyone wishes to attend the re-enactment or take part could
they please let me know. Anyone who is prepared to bring their 10 x 8 or hold
the other end of the piece of string will be very welcome.
