In my article, the use of the term "rule" is just a
matter of editorial choice, believe me. People need to
grasp the idea as simple as possible.

OTOH, a cylindrical panoramic doesn't need to be
*mounted* or presented as a cylinder, so that might be
the solution. If it were mounted as a cylinder, then
the use of large and small objects (trees or
buildings) could help solve the controversy of thirds
(a prominent object would "mark" one third). Another
option is the use of strong perspective line, like a
road going into distance.

As of the judging in a contest, I guess there are
things we just can't help. If you are consistent for a
long time, then you will become the rule-maker
yourself!  :-)
