Get your hands on an old "Photography and the American Scene", by 
Robert Taft. Dover re-published it a number of times, and I think it's 
one of the best resources for the history of photography from inception 
to 1889. No ISBN (too old), but the Library of Congress Catalog # is 
64-18373.
