Re: Advice on digital camera

Hejsan, Klas!

Last fall I decided to supplement my D60 gear with something smaller, so I bought a Canon G3 when prices dropped to make room for the newer G5. I like the G3 a lot, so much in fact that I´ve all but stopped using the D60. I´ve never regretted not getting the G5, but probably the difference wouldn´t have been dramatic.

However, if I were planning to buy a new camera now, I´d certainly wait a month or two, just to see what the new crop of cameras will do to the market; Canon´s Pro 1 seems to be a direct successor to the G5. Even if 8 Mp isn´t worth the noise increase (personally I don´t think it is), the "market" will believe bigger must be better, and so the prices of older cameras will start to drop...

One new camera I would certainly want to feel and handle before deciding on something else, is the new Leica/Panasonic. It is not 8 Mp, only 5, so some people have already started to ridicule it, but it seems to be very well designed from an ergonomic point of view, with traditional controls for almost everything.

Hi everyone!

I've been monitoring this listserv for a while but have now decided to ask my question. I would like some advice on which digital camera to buy. I have the old Canon Powershot A40, which I like, but it needs to be upgraded. I also have the Canon 300 (Rebel in USA) with a couple of cheap lenses. I've been thinking of upgrading to the Canon 300D (or Digital Rebel), but I still think it is too expensive. So, my question is, what digital camera would you recommend in the price category somewhere under $500?

I have some candidates like Fuji FinePix S7000, Canon G5 and G3, Nikon Coolpix 5700, Minolta 7Hi, Olympus C-5050 and C-5060, but I might very well forgotten someone. From what you read, all have their pros and cons. I don't care about the size, what I do care about is the image quality (of course). Low f-stops, good zoom and macro is a plus.

Sincerely,

Klas Hjelm
