1) This probably should not have been quoted in full without Colburn's permission given that it carries a fairly obvious copyright notice. It would have been far better to use just the link.
2) He's a humor writer. It's not clear that he is doing anything more than entertaining with his column. He is the man, after all, that published a column titled "Kill All the Leica Collectors."
