So my (long winded) question is, assuming the Sony CAN
take good pictures w/appropriate lighting, what kind
of indoor lighting solution would anyone recommend?

Look around for a Vivitar DF200 flash. You should find one for about $80-90

DF200 Features:

" A universal flash designed for any digital camera with an integral flash
" Acts as a slave to your integral (built-in) digital camera flash
" Learning-mode intelligently profiles your cameras existing flash
" Use with more than one digital camera - just repeat the learning mode
" Four selectable power levels (Full, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16)
" Zoom head with detents (click stops) for wide, mid, telephoto position
" 0 to 90 degree vertical bounce angle
" 0 to 330 degree Horizontal Swivel
" Guide Number 92 (ISO 100/ft) at mid - zoom setting
" Kit includes universal mounting bracket with Quick-Disconnect
" Can be mounted on a universal flash shoe bracket

The universal bracket mentioned above attaches via the tripod socket.

Take half an hour or so and experiment with ceiling and side wall bounce and cover part of the on camera flash to control fill light. Try off ceiling bounce and tape a layer of Styrofoam cup over the camera flash just to fill under the eyes.

This slave flash will work well with any digicam that allows the redeye reduction feature to be turned off and you can use it on any future camera up-grade.

I doubt you will find another light combo that will do as good a job for anywhere near the price.
