So my (long winded) question is, assuming the Sony CAN
take good pictures w/appropriate lighting, what kind
of indoor lighting solution would anyone recommend?

Look around for a Vivitar DF200 flash. You should find one for about $80-90 US. It acts as a slave to your built in flash (if your camera allows you to turn off the red-eye reduction feature).

The DF200 has four power levels. Zooms for moderate wide angle to moderate tel. Bounces up and to the side. Has a guide number of 92 with ISO 100 and at mid zoom setting. Has a "universal" mounting bracket that uses the tripod socket. Will fit any future digital camera up-grade.

Works fine bounced off light color ceiling. The on camera flash will fill in the under eye shadow usually produced with bounce flash.

I don't think you can find a better solution to your problem anywhere near the same price.
