So where do the people fit who prefer semi-gloss (or semi-matte) prints? I find that to be the best of all possible worlds.

Granted, it may be a matter of taste but, in my experience, prints that need the muted contrast of matte surfaces have contrast difficulties regardless of the medium, analog or digital.
