Norman,

Instead I've found, with a few very notable exceptions, messages containing gossip, mindless responses to honest if simple questions, misleading tech advice (understandable on any list), utterly off-topic postings, and so on. [note the content of the last few days] <<<<

Andrew (the list owner and moderator) has stated in the past he is not in favor of stepping on the posts that frequent this list. Understandable if you want to allow conversation to flow and ebb as it will. Try visiting the "Editorial Photographer's" list. They are brutal about what posts can be listed. They literally read every submission before it's posted to the list and will ruthlessly reject any posting that is not specificly on target. Even posts that echo another post are rejected on most occasions.

So, you have it both ways. One list has the feeling of a family (with some of it's members treated as black sheep) but still, an overall friendly place and another list with an environment akin to being in a CIA operations room.

There is another list, much quieter than this one, which is almost 100% on topic and very little "chit chat." This list, Photo Techniques, is quiet until someone asks a relative question, there are answers, suggestions and discussion until that topic has run it's course, then everyone gets back to their work. It's also friendly with no smart ass remarks or flaming or black sheep.

You are right though, there has been an unbelievable amount of bandwidth wasted on rhetoric and mindless chatter on this list at times, but that seems common at any social gathering.

Take care,
Gregory david Stempel
