My understanding for this sort of thing is that, upon drowning, remove any 
batteries and keep the poor camera in fresh, preferably distilled, water until 
you get to the repairer.

If drowned in salt water, flush gently and repeatedly with fresh water before 
you carry it to your repairer.

Keeping it in the water reduces corrosion and prevents any river gunk from 
drying out and sticking hard to things.
