Are you not a member of a society the minute you call yourself a photographer? Can it not be considered instead, as avocation toward higher ideals? Being a responsible member of a community? Did you not mention in an earlier post the American Society of Media Photographers? Call yourself a journalist and regardless of what you think, audiences have certain expectations. If that is bothersome, call yourself an editorialist and then, there is no reason to care.
