Jeff is right, but perhaps a better way is to start with the understanding that you have an array of square pixels. Every image file is X pixels wide, and Y pixels high. That is what you have nothing more, nothing less. Adding a DPI is simply a scale for telling software how many pixels of the image you want to consumer per inch of output AT PRINT TIME.
