Andrew I suspect that the motive is to have the mechanism in place for eventually charging to read the items (subscription). I agree with you though: I never sign in to anything unless I have a very very pressing need to subscribe. A lot of useful on-line sites start out free, move to a registration page then (once you have realised how valuable they are) start wanting to earn money ;o) Sigh ...
