Well, I see similar but slightly different things under Linux. They seem to all my from my machine though, probably because I tend to leave connections open for longer than most people. I do this, of course, because I run Gnus. After spending a long time in a mail group, I quite often try to move on to an NNTP group, only to find that my existing connection is hung. If I restart Gnus, the NNTP group is immediately readable, and the old nntpcache process goes away. I haven't heard any complaints from the other users though, who all use Netscape as their newsreader. Presumably this is because when they are done "reading news", they close the newsreader window, which dumps the connection.
