basic ques --- installation from rpm and source

hi all

i had a basic doubt

i had e2fsprogs -1.39 version in my m/c i wanted 1.41 version of it.
i got source of it in .tar.gz form and installed it from source as per README file.
it installed successfully .... but i guess rpm list still is pointing to old rpm ....

because
it still shows older version

rpm -qa | grep -i e2fsprogs
       e2fsprogs-1.39-20.el5.i386
       e2fsprogs-devel-1.39-20.el5.i386
       e2fsprogs-libs-1.39-20.el5.i386

but if i do this

/sbin/mkfs.ext2 fs-version
mke2fs 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)

it shows as if version 1.41 is there

Now
in this situation ...i tried to remove rpm ..but it warns that other rpms are dependent on it for working.
how do i ensure that ....when i use ext2fs.h in my c file ...the functions ext2fs_open are being used from latest version?
