Similar errors could be due to lack of partition type, lack of fs or
lack of disk controller driver.

Does anybody understand what you should and should not select for
partition types?
I would have thought for a linux only, ext3 only sata drive box you
could ensure none of them were selected and all would be well. Failing
that if they were all modules that should work as well as they would
only be loaded on demand? Any light you guys have to shed.

Not having the source handy, I think you at least need the PC-style
partition support. If they are modules, they need to be available in
your initramfs or initrd (and such is *required* if they are modular)
to be available to get userspace up and running. It's simpler to just
build-in the one type you need (in my experience, at least, there's
only one type needed).
