Can anyone suggest an better alternative to using UML for testing my
changes to ext3 on 2.6?

I primarily use qemu since I can basically take any distro I want and do a normal install. I've installed the full desktop install of ubuntu and several hours later I was at the graphical gdm login screen. It's a lot slower, but I've found it a lot more stable than UML. (Although it has been some time since I've used UML, and I'm sure the 2.6 support has stabilized since then).

Cheers,
Andy
