I am a bit paranoid (realistic?) so I've made a reciprocal agreement with
a friend that lives 3000 miles away. We store encrypted backups of
important stuff on each other's computers. I also burn DVDs and make
backups on USB memory sticks whenever I remember and throw them in a fire
resistant safe.

I don't know how realistic others are, but it seems to me that everyone of
us has at least one friend far removed geographically. I don't know of a
safer solution that is more valuable - you maintain safe backups and a
friendship.
