No, if you know what you are doing, there are good reasons to remove it, or to replace it with a different meta package (such as the -unlocked variants). Only those packages should be essential that are required for the package management itself to work. For the maemo platform, that might still be a lot: everything needed to start and use the Application manager (and X-Term?) could be considered essential.
