I started tethering my N800 via my brand-new HTC Mogul (Sprint) this
weekend, and for that case PAN was the key to making it work. I'm using
maemo-pan, and that's working well based on limited use (I just got the
phone Saturday) so far.

(PAN = something Area Networking, DUN = Dial Up Networking, and
apparently DUN support is gradually being dropped, particularly out of
the Windows-based phones.)
