The *real* problems I was dealing with were totally unrelated to fennec. It was a reflash and *attempted restore* that caused the major headaches. If I installed FF3 beta on Ubuntu, it would not require a complete OS reinstall (and all the other programs) in order to recover from any problem that it may cause, and I don't have that idiotic root permission issue to deal with in any event.
