I agree.  Vote for bug 2881 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2881) and 
hope they fix it before you need your backup :-)

Seriously, the data is saved in the backup and can be retrieved by 
installing "unzip" and playing with it from the command line.  If you found 
yourself in the position where you really needed the data from that backup 
and it wouldn't restore I am sure a question here or in ITT would result in 
some help.

I *think* restore works if you re-flash your device.  I haven't tested it but 
I seem to remember using it in the past.  The problem *seems* to be restoring 
backups when some of the data in the backup already exists.

And, just to be clear, this is not just a problem for GPE -- it applies to 
documents you backup as well.
