Both of the files I used were from the Nokia-site. I downloaded the 2nd
maybe 2 days after the first. The only difference was that I entered a
different serial number for the 2nd download, but I doubt they compile
the image on the fly to include a serial number...

Could it be the image is mirrored and you dont always get the same? If
one version was broken, this would maybe explain it. (It would still be
interesting to know what exactly causes the flasher to issue
"usb_bulk_write: Broken pipe". Is it a signal it recieves on the cable?
Or something with the file its trying to transmit?)

Maybe Nokia could provide a checksum with the file on the download page
along with a short instruction on how to verify it?
