You're not wasting anyone's time, that's what we are here for. I think the gpio stuff would be great to have, if it uses the correct kernel interface. I can't add a one-off for a single driver, with custom ioctls, that's not the way to create a sustainable system. So if you convert the patch to use the gpio subsystem, I will be glad to review it again.
