Well, there was not much of an alternative for users recently, or am I wrong there? And "option" announces itself in the kernel configuration as "USB driver for GSM and CDMA modems".

Anyway, if I now understand the purpose of the patch right, it would be the cleanest approach to have a new generic WWAN driver using "usb_wwan.c" and move from "option" all non-Option modems (not having special needs or capabilities) there.

Something like "wwan" or "wwan_generic".

BTW, I just counted the product IDs in "option" ...

Generic Option:  25
Non-Option:     169
