There are lots of non-Option devices recognized by the "option" driver. Will they be transferred to a new driver with a different name, or will they stay where they are?

The option driver actually appears to perform some commands that are option-specific - if the other devices don't work the same way they probably /ought/ to be in a different driver, but it doesn't make any real difference.

I'm promoting the use of "option" to users who try to make their modems work with "usbserial". From this point, allow me to ask what the benefits are of a new driver if there is no real difference?

I'm afraid it would only add confusion.

And for new modem devices not known to any of the serial drivers, will the recommendation be to use the new generic wwan driver rather than "option"?

If they behave like option devices, they ought to go in option - if they don't, they probably shouldn't.

All of the current modems that expose generic serial ports are working fine with "option". I'm still wondering what kind of benefits the new driver will bring.
