I'd like to ask about the consequences of this for wireless USB modem usage in the future.

There are lots of non-Option devices recognized by the "option" driver. Will they be transferred to a new driver with a different name, or will they stay where they are?

And for new modem devices not known to any of the serial drivers, will the recommendation be to use the new generic wwan driver rather than "option"?
