Hi,
Honestly Jung, now that it works, i don't want to open the motherboard
to manipulate it, risking
a bad manipulation.
My English is not very good and i'm afraid too of the sentence by ASROCK
support :
"/Waking up from standby via mouse or keyboard will then not be possible"
/
is this mean that i can't take control of computer when it falls in
stand-by state?
humm...I don't like this.

Hi,
Glad it works with the hub.
Is that fine too with the changing of jumper setting?
Thanks,

Yes, I prefer to check the power supply first, if it is not the root
problem, then go to check others.
Have you tried plug into one _powered_ hub between the Host and the usb disk?
It will help in my experience.
BTW, what is you usb disk cable look like?
Is that like
[A] ______________[B]
[A} ____/
If so, you can first add the two [A] connecter to the Host, and then
plug the [B] connecter to your device.
Thanks,
Jung

Hi Alan,
thanks you for your help!
hum...excuse my english but i'm french, i didn't understand precisely
the term "run off power". (insufficent energy i presume ?)
I was asking if the disk drive gets all its power from the USB
connection.
The Hard Disk has two usb cables, one for power supply (optional),
another for USB transmission.
When i connect the two (connecting first the usb cable power supply, and
after the usb data transmission cable.)
The problem is not resolved. lsusb or /proc/bus/usb/devices don't show
nothing more.
i test all my usb ports, the device is not reactive.
It sounds like the ports don't supply enough power for the drive to
run. Or else the drive is broken, but you said that it still works on
other computers.
Is it possible that there's a BIOS limitation of usb power supply (that
can be changed?)
No.
i'm going to verify if i find something on the subject.
if you see another thing, i remains attentive,
Have you tried using usbmon to trace what happens when you plug in the
drive? See Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt.

Hi,
I bought this morning a usb hub "BELKIN Plus Hub" with external
power supply and i connected the Lacie external Hard Disk on it.
*The Lacie external Hard Disk works fine now* !!
I also have a response this afternoon from the ASROCK technical
support on the motherboard P4VM8, and they described how to
increase the usb power supply on motherboard :
(can be useful, but i'm just afraid of sentence : /"Waking up from
standby via mouse or keyboard will then not be possible")/
[ *
* /Hello,//
Linux is not officially supported on this motherboard. But I
guess the problem has nothing to do with Linux.
Please press F11 during booting. You will get a boot menu. If
the BIOS detects the HDD, then it should be shown in this boot menu/
/ These bus powered external HDDs use a lot of power. You can
give some extra power to the USB ports by changing a jumper setting.
Waking up from standby via mouse or keyboard will then not be
possible. Please shut down power and move the jumper PS2_USB_PWR1
from pins 2&3 to pins 1&2. See attached image. /
/ If that does not help, then please disconnect everything
from the USB headers on the motherboard. See attached image.
Then test on the ports on the I/O panel. /

/ Best regards, /
