Yes, I prefer to check the power supply first, if it is not the root problem, then go to check others. Have you tried plug into one _powered_ hub between the Host and the usb disk? It will help in my experience. BTW, what is you usb disk cable look like? Is that like [A] ______________[B] [A} ____/ If so, you can first add the two [A] connecter to the Host, and then plug the [B] connecter to your device.
